No their PH values are quite different and baking soda would never work
its just too mild. Baking soda is used in some indigestion remedies
Where as washing soda is used in some paint strippers and drain
cleaners, it is commonly known here as caustic soda, one thing to keep
in mind should you ever accidently get splashed with a washing soda
solution vinegar will help neutralise it.

Washing Soda and Caustic Soda are NOT the same thing. You didn’t order lye.

Thank you yes I stand to be corrected Sodium hydroxide which is also known as caustic soda
Washing soda is a crystalline decahydrate( Na²CO³.IOH²O) but you can
substitute sodium carbonate(Na²CO³) also called sal soda.
Sodium carbonate is used in the manufacture of baking soda, also known
as Bicarbonate of soda but it has a hydrogen atom in its chain ( NaHCO³)
also sometimes sold as sodium hydrogencarbonate. In all honesty I have
been out of laboratory work for so darn long but no I would not
substitute bicarb for washing soda their PH values will be diffrent.

rid of all household chemicals and cleaning products, and now I make
my own. Laundry soap was the last thing to go, because it was the
    hardest to find stuff for.<
Good for you! When my son was diagnosed, we switched over to
cleaning with vinegar and lavender essential oil with water in a
mister for cleaning. We avoid synthetic fragrances in all products.
I do use commercial laundry detergents because he is OK with them,
but I buy the ones with no fragrance and add a 1/4 cup of borax to
each load to freshen the clothes…really gets rid of the mustyness
when the load sits in the washer for a short time before it gets into
the dryer. Mold was the thing that was the thing that set him off
the worst, made more serious by having given him antibiotics for
repeated ear infections creating the vicious circle of
    illness/prescription - more illness/stronger prescription. Once we
stopped giving him prescription antibiotics for every little thing
and treated him with naturopathic medicine & homeopathy he stopped
having asthma. I strongly encourage you to seek out a board
certified, licensed ND if they have them in your state…it changed
our lives. Contact me privately if you’d like more info. Susan
