Marketing

Good Morning All,
I’ve just recently stumbled upon this group, which is tremendous. My
wife and I have been creating B&B products for close to a year. We’ve
sold with a better than average success at craft fairs. Have our
products in a few local stores. But we are very eager to expand.
But here comes the question if you all don’t mind. With the small
amount of success we’ve had it’s only wetted our appetities to
increase sales. Alas neither of us are marketing people and I am
having a challenging time trying to lay out a proper marketing plan
to increase sales and to expand the region which we are selling. Is
there any advice anyone would be willing to share to lead me in the
right direction of creating a solid marketing plan.
Any advice is very appreciated.

Jason,I dont know if I can be of much help or not.We just started
into this business. But we have been batting around a few ideas. My
sister sells candles, she has people that sell for her.Kinda like
Avon. She marks the items down 20% I think, or whatever your wholesale
price would be and these people sell your items and make the
difference.Another idea is home parties, where you or ones you have
working for you set up parties with some kind of reward for hostess,
and re-booking.I know my sister is doing well with the the people
selling under her.I dont know if this is what your wanting or
    not.Hope it helps some.

If you read the story of the success of “Bath and Body Works” you
know that the business was started in her home, and as her business
grew, she could not keep up with orders and could not find time to
market her product and thus she hired a business manager and the rest
    is history.
You might want to consider hiring a “marketing agent”….which is
something like a “real estate agent” in that the person gets a small
percentage of the Sale and the agent is the one who takes your
product out to retail locations and SELLS it for you and keeps up
with the orders. Most businesses consider having an agent a MUST
HAVE since it takes so much time to manufacture the products, there
is no time to do the leg work of going place to place, local,
regional and national, to Sell the products.
A marketing plan is simply….where do I want to expand my
sales…local, regional, national, and how do I want to expand my
product line, and what growth rate can I sucessfully handle.
Ben and Gerry’s ice cream started as a home based business but it got
out of hand because they grew too fast too soon and could not keep up
with all the business and growth, and had to hire a business manager
so they could consentrate on production.
There are local experts that can help you as well, that being your
local Small Business Association known as SCORE which are a group of
retired businessmen who volunteer to help others start and grow a
small business. You can find your local representative online by
doing a search for SCORE and locating your town or area on their
website. They also have resources you can tap into for developing a
marketing plan, a business plan, doing business in your state, etc
etc. A very valuable resource indeed and well worth investigating.
Be aware that small successes do not mean you will suceed in the
future as this is a very competitive business with so many home-based
businesses entering and leaving daily. Find a “niche” meaning a
product line that is unique and not found in your local and region
    and develop that line.
Taking business cources from SCORE is also what I would recommend so
your aware of all the facets of owning a a small business and the
pros and cons of expansion into a real business venture full time.
Most small businesses fail because they had no business or marketing
plan, and little knowledge of how to operate a small business.
It is a LOT of work, included a lot of record keeping, planning, etc
and more than a 9-5 job, because it is really a 20 hour job !!!! LOL
A marketing plan is part of a business plan and one should set down
and develop a 5 year plan before you sell your products.
Also be aware of all local, regional, state and federal rules and
regulations which apply, it is very important to follow FDA rules and
regs….and state rules and regs of selling personal care products.
I could go on and on, but here is a little bit to consider
